How to Play Teen Patti —
Rules & Hand Rankings
India's classic three-card game, explained simply. Learn the rankings, the betting flow, blind vs seen play, sideshow rules and the most popular variants.
Blind vs Seen Play Explained
Teen Patti revolves around an asymmetric betting dynamic: betting without looking at your hand vs betting with full knowledge.
The Blind Player
A player who bets into the pot without looking at their 3 dealt face-down cards. Blind play exerts psychological pressure on seen players.
- ✔ Cost Advantage: Bets only 1x of the current boot / stake level.
- ✔ Cap Limit: Most table rules cap consecutive blind bets to a maximum of 4 rounds.
- ✔ Sideshow Immunity: Blind players cannot be challenged to a Sideshow.
The Seen Player (Chaal)
A player who has picked up and inspected their hand. Having visual confirmation requires paying a premium on every single bet.
- ✔ Double Cost: Must put in at least 2x the blind bet (or up to 4x to raise).
- ✔ Action Options: Can Pack (fold), Chaal (match bet), or request a Sideshow.
- ✔ Information Advantage: Knows exact hand strength before risking larger chips.
The Sideshow (Back-Show) Rule
A seen player can request a private Sideshow from the previous seen player immediately before them in turn. If accepted, both secretly compare cards: the player with the lower hand must instantly fold. If hands are equal, the player who initiated the sideshow folds.
Popular Teen Patti Variations
Online card rooms feature custom table variations that alter traditional rankings and introduce wild cards.
Muflis (Reverse)
Traditional hand hierarchies are completely inverted. The lowest possible hand beats the highest hand.
AK47
All Aces, Kings, 4s, and 7s of every suit act as wild cards (Jokers) and can replace any card needed.
Lowest Card Joker
The lowest card present in each player’s individual 3-card hand automatically becomes their wild Joker.
4x Boot Table
The baseline pot boot value starts at 4x the normal table stake, rapidly escalating pot sizes and showdown stakes.
Teen Patti Strategy & Bankroll Tips
Professional card players treat Teen Patti as a game of odds, discipline, and emotional control rather than pure luck.
Start Blind, Switch Smart
Cost EfficiencyPlaying the first 1–2 rounds blind costs only half the chips of seen players while forcing them to double their stakes. If seen players raise aggressively, look at your cards immediately and pack weak holdings.
Fold Early with Low Pairs
Risk ReductionA pair of 4s or 6s looks decent on a 3-card deal, but in a 5 to 6-player pot, low pairs are statistical traps. Pack early rather than paying repeated chaals into pure sequences and high card duels.
Leverage Sideshow Pressure
Information EdgeIf holding a medium hand like a high pair (A-A or K-K), ask the preceding seen player for a sideshow. It instantly eliminates one opponent without inflating the public table pot beyond control.
The 5% Bankroll Formula
Capital PreservationNever bring your entire wallet balance to a single table. Ensure the boot amount represents less than 2%–5% of your total session bankroll, giving you enough runway to absorb inevitable dry streaks.
The Golden Rule of Table Discipline
Decide your maximum stop-loss and profit target before joining any table. Cash out when ahead.
